Bahrain princes sues Michael Jackson in UK court

LONDON, Nov. 17, 2008 (Reuters) — A son of the king of Bahrain took U.S. pop star Michael Jackson to court on Monday for reneging on an agreement to record a new album and write an autobiography.
Bankim Thanki, the lawyer representing Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad al-Khalifa, told London's High Court that his client had made several payments to Jackson from 2005 onwards, including $35,000 to pay utility bills at Jackson's Neverland Ranch.

The court heard that the following month, in April 2005, Jackson asked for one million dollars through an assistant, the Press Association reported.

"Sheikh Abdullah made many more payments on his behalf or to others," Thanki said.

"Sheikh Abdullah began to support Mr. Jackson financially after 2005 when it became clear that Mr. Jackson was in very serious financial difficulties, much to Sheikh Abdullah's surprise," Thanki added.

The early financial support coincided with Jackson's 2005 trial on child molestation charges. Despite his acquittal, the case left the 50-year-old performer's reputation and financial status in tatters.

Jackson spent time in Bahrain as a guest of the royal family following the trial, and in April 2006 a statement was released on behalf of Bahrain music label Two Seas Records announcing he would record a new album for release in 2007.

The sheikh is suing the pop legend for allegedly reneging on a $7 million "pay-back" agreement designed to repay money he advanced to Jackson during his financial troubles.

He said he and Jackson entered into a "combined rights agreement" under which the star was committed to a recording contract, an autobiography and a musical stage play.

But Jackson contests that there was no valid agreement and that the sheikh's case was based on "mistake, misrepresentation and undue influence."

In his pleaded defense, Jackson said the payments he received were "gifts" and that no project was ever finalized.

At the start of a court hearing set for up to 12 days, the judge heard that an application would be made for Jackson to give evidence via video link from Los Angeles.

Is Nicole Richie too skinny to shoping?

Did Nicole Richie take that phrase “shop until you drop” too seriously?

The super-skinny reality show star reportedly fainted while doing a little retail therapy. Richie — who has admitted that she’s too thin but has denied that she has an eating disorder — collapsed while browsing at Kitson, a chic LA boutique, on July 15, according to Life & Style.

“She was looking through a rack of clothes when she suddenly fainted and hit the floor,” an “eyewitness” told the mag. “The staff helped her to a chair and offered her something to eat. She shot back, ‘No!’ and mumbled something about it being ‘so hot.’” Although Richie turned away food, she did accept a glass of water, reports the mag, and after about 20 minutes “was steady enough to leave.”

Richie’s rep couldn’t be reached for comment, but a spokeswoman for the store denies the incident.

Tangled up in blue
Demi Moore scandalized some royal watchers by attending a lavish costume ball for Princess Beatrice — and changing into jeans half way through the event.

Beatrice, the daughter of the Duke and Dutchess of York, had an elegant masked ball, estimated to cost more than $725,000, at Windsor Castle celebrating her 18th birthday. The three hundred guests — who included assorted lords and ladies as well as celebs such as Elton John and model Elle Macpherson — were asked to dress in period costumes from 1888 (Beatrice was born in August, 1988).

Moore showed up in a stunning, white Victorian ball gown but mid-party, she snuck away to slip into something more comfortable. “She went upstairs to change, then she came back a few minutes later in a black T-shirt, jeans and black pumps,” a source told the London Mirror, which reports that Moore ditched the gown because she wanted to boogie nimbly with her hubby, Ashton Kutcher. “No one else saw fit to change their outfits, and most people who saw Demi before and after thought it showed a thorough lack of respect to the hosts,” one guest huffed to the paper. “You wouldn't even wear jeans to go to a decent nightclub — let alone a royal residence.”

Notes from all over
Kabbalah-loving celebs such as Moore and Madonna tout the healing powers of Kabbalah Water, but it looks like at least one leader of the controversial group promotes something a little more potent. Gilla Mogilevsky, the Australian head of the controversial group, was arrested and charged with possessing more than $2 million worth of marijuana, according to various reports from down under. ... Meanwhile, Madonna has been spotted without her Kabbalah red string, fueling buzz that she’s cooling on the group. ... Luke Wilson thinks he needs a psychiatrist. Or maybe not. “My style is to think, Yeah, I really need to go see somebody, and then not do it, and then get over it and think, You know what? I’m okay! I actually saved some money! I just had to ride out the storm! But I don’t see how it can’t help to talk to somebody who’s not a friend,” the “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” star tells the August issue of Elle magazine. “It’s one of those things I’m interested in and I know it could help. I just think, ‘How do I find somebody who’s good and takes Screen Actors Guild insurance?’”

Paris Hilton dumps Nicole Richie

Despite the protestations of TV critics, Fox's The Simple Life 3: Interns has followed its predecessor editions to become one of the biggest unscripted TV hits of the year. But would it be as successful without both Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie? The answer appears to be coming this fall.

In an interview with USA Today, Paris Hilton confirmed the longstanding rumor that Nicole Richie would not be part of the fourth edition of The Simple Life, which will film on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Instead, said Paris, the new co-star would be Paris' pal Kimberly Stewart, the daughter of rocker Rod Stewart and his ex-wife Alana.
In her comments to USA Today at Wednesday night's "Young Hot Hollywood Style Awards," Paris made it clear whom she thinks is the straw that stirs The Simple Life. Said Paris, "It's my show; I've had it three seasons, and I just want to freshen it up — make it newer and funner." "Funner"?

Even though a spokesperson for Paris said in January that splitting up Paris and Nicole "would be like Lucy and Ethel splitting up," Paris confirmed her desire to change the show in a separate interview with E! that night. "You know, I've had three great seasons [on the Simple Life]," said Paris, who was accompanied to the awards by Kimberly Stewart. "I love the show." She then went on to say that she wanted to "bring new things in. It’s going to be a big surprise. And everyone is going to be very excited and happy about it."
One set of people who are unlikely to be "very excited and happy" about Paris' public statements are Fox and the show's producers, Bunim-Murray Productions. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the two entities issued a statement yesterday to address the controversy without either confirming or denying Paris' scoop (which, in Hollywood-speak, would generally be seen as a basic confirmation). The statement read: "We are currently discussing internally the creative direction of the next season of The Simple Life. We are huge fans of both Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie and look forward to solidifying our plans for the next installment of this fantastic franchise in the very near future."
BMP and Fox are reported have contract options with both Paris and Nicole for five seasons of the show, and they could legally force Paris to do Simple Life 4 without meeting her demands. However, Paris delayed filming of Simple Life 3 by pleading an overloaded schedule (however, rumors at the time were that she and Nicole had had a falling out, and she wanted Nicole gone), and she probably could delay Simple Life 4 even more if she failed to get her way.

A report on the syndicated show The Insider, for which Kimberly Stewart previously worked as a correspondent, said that producers would attempt to mollify Nicole Richie by giving her a new reality show of her own, a Newlyweds-styled effort focused on her upcoming wedding to Adam Goldstein, known professionally as DJ AM. Whether any network would be interested in such a show is not known.
Nicole and her publicist declined comment on her status on The Simple Life 4. But Paris hinted that Nicole might want out of the show because of her upcoming marriage: "She's engaged and she's working like a dog." Funny, it seems more true that she's being treated like a dog.

Paris also wanted to gush about her friendship with Kimberly, who bears a definite resemblance to her father Rod. "We've known each other since we were in our moms' tummies ... we've been doing fashion shows for charity since we were three-years-old. We've always been getting dressed up together our whole lives." Sounds a lot like what Paris used to say about Nicole, with the exception of the prenatal communications.

When asked by E! who the bigger troublemaker of the two is, Kimberly laughed and pointed at Paris. Replied Paris, "When you're with your friend you've known your whole life, you totally trust them. We just act like sisters ... we have fun."

If the co-star shift happens, The Simple Life 4 would not represent Kimberly's first bid to achieve the media profile of her co-star. Last fall, she discussed recording an album that would include her dad's 1970s hit "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" Kimberly also made reality TV news when she received new breast implants and "donated" her used ones to The Osbournes son Jack.

Kimberly would also join her mom, Alana Hamilton Stewart, as a veteran of reality TV. Alana appears in Farrah Fawcett's new show Chasing Farrah, and she was one of the stars of (and primary villains on) the ABC Survivor clone I'm A Celebrity -- Get Me Out Of Here!.

Kimberly's dad was once rumored to be doing his own reality show for a fee of 25 million pounds from MTV -- a rumor which proved to be false because of Rod Stewart's belief that "private life is private." Evidently his ex-wife and his daughter disagree.

Sexy Paris Hilton

NEW YORK (CNN) - Hamburger chain Carl's Jr. is making no apologies for its new Spicy Burger television commercial, which features Hilton hotel heiress and reality TV star Paris Hilton in a skin-tight swimsuit soaping up a Bentley and crawling all over it before taking a big bite out of the burger.

The ad, which has been running in major markets since last week, has drawn the ire of television watchdogs, including the Parents Television Council.

"This commercial is basically soft-core porn," said Melissa Caldwell, research director for the PTC. "The way she moves, the way she puts her finger in her mouth -- it's very suggestive and very titillating."

The Los Angeles-based advocacy group plans to mobilize its more than 1 million members to contact the restaurant chain and voice their displeasure.

At this point, the PTC does not plan to petition the FCC to make Carl's Jr. remove the ad. Nor does it plan a boycott of the burger chain.

The PTC's main objection is that unlike a television program, parents have no way of knowing when the Paris Hilton Spicy Burger ad is going to appear on TV, and cannot steer their children away from it.

Since May 19, the ad has run during sports programs, on ABC's "Desperate Housewives" finale Sunday and on the season-ending episodes of Fox's "The O.C." and NBC's "The Apprentice."

Carl's Jr.'s message to the PTC: The group needs to "get a life," said Andy Puzder, CEO of Carl's Jr., a subsidiary of CKE Restaurants (Research). "This isn't Janet Jackson -- there is no nipple in this. There is no nudity, there is no sex acts -- it's a beautiful model in a swimsuit washing a car."

Puzder says he has shown the ad to his three children, ages 12, 9 and 7, and they have shown no signs of being corrupted. "Maybe people are excited because it's Paris Hilton, but there are far worse things on television that these groups should be worried about," Puzder said.

But the PTC says it has a problem with the context and the content of the ad, not the personalities involved.

Caldwell says that because the ad is airing during sports programs, and FOX's "OC", which are heavily watched by teens, it promotes sexuality to an audience that might not be ready for it. "It's difficult to gauge how children are going to react to this," Caldwell said.

Carl's Jr. features the ad on its Web site, carlsjr.com, and also built a separate Web site called SpicyParis.com to play a 60-second version of the commercial. The company says SpicyParis.com was so overwhelmed with traffic last Friday that the Web site crashed. It is now back in operation.

A similar ad with Hilton for CKE's Hardee's hamburger chain is expected to air next month. The restaurant chain would not comment on how much Hilton was paid for the one day shoot to create the Spicy Burger ad, but its executives were impressed with her demeanor. "She was very business-like," said CEO Puzder.

Paris Hilton has a problem keeping her personal life personal.

Artist Mariah Carey waited for her wedding night

LONDON - Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon waited until their wedding to take their relationship to the next level, the superstar singer revealed to the Daily Mirror on Friday.

“It’s not that we had no intimacy, we just didn’t have complete intimacy,” she told the U.K. newspaper. “It’s just me, and my feelings. I definitely don’t want to push it on anybody else. But we both have similar beliefs, and I just thought that it would be so much more special if we waited until after we were married. And it was, and it still is.”

They didn’t have to wait long — the couple was married in the Bahamas in April after a whirlwind two-month romance.

“He’s incredibly romantic,” Mariah said, showing off a pair of heart-shaped diamond earrings that her husband purchased to celebrate their six-month anniversary. “He bought me these, and the biggest bunch of flowers you’ve ever seen.”

There was a time that the pop star, who was previously married to record company exec Tommy Motolla, thought she wouldn’t walk down the aisle again.

“I was hesitant for a long time to get into a relationship and lose control of my heart and myself as a human being. I was very protective of myself. But this was something different,” she said.

The lovebirds have even gotten tattoos of each other’s names, and Mariah called her new husband “The One.”

“We really do feel we are soulmates,” she said. “We actually first met each other in 2005, and we definitely had chemistry then, but we were both with other people and it wasn’t the right time… we met again on my video shoot and it all just clicked.”

And though she told the paper she has a world tour in the works for 2009, Mariah is also contemplating adding to her family soon.

“I think we would make good parents,” she admitted. “I just think about it as the next phase. We’ll see.”

An Interview with Monica Bellucci Star of Hollywood

Extraordinary things can happen to ordinary people. This was proven to me when on one otherwise typical summer morning, my phone rang and in a matter of moments, I was connected to Monica Bellucci -- one of the most beautiful human beings on the face of the earth -- in Paris. I must be doing something right.

The Italian actress, not so surprisingly, began her career as a model in Europe, and was first seen by American audiences in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” in 1992. Working exclusively in Europe for the remainder of the ‘90s, Bellucci starred in a few high-profile imports (“Malena,” “Brotherhood of the Wolf,” “Irreversible”) in the early part of the current decade, but really came to prominence in the U.S. with starring roles in 2003’s “Tears of the Sun,” and the final two installments of “The Matrix” trilogy. Things have not slowed at all in 2004, as Bellucci has been seen in Spike Lee’s “She Hate Me” and, of course, Mel Gibson's “The Passion of the Christ.” The best film, however, I have seen Bellucci in to date is Gabriele Muccino’s powerful look at the chaotic disintegration of an Italian family, “Remember Me, My Love.” Bellucci stars as the radiant Alessia, a woman stuck in an unsatisfying marriage, who re-kindles a relationship with her married ex-lover Carlo.

The Italian film was picked up for distribution in the U.S. by Roadside Attractions and will be released in Los Angeles on September 10, having already opened in New York a week earlier. One of the best movies to be released in the U.S. this year, “Remember Me, My Love” is a virtuoso piece of filmmaking. It was obvious that Ms. Bellucci took great pleasure in discussing the film, and it made for a very pleasant early morning chat.

EI: You’ve starred in several high profile American movies over the past few years and have become very well known in this country. How do you like working on American films as opposed to European ones?

MB: I like to come to America once in a while. I’m European, so for me it’s important to stay in Europe and make European movies and then come to America to do something interesting for me. I’m not ready to make an American movie just because it’s American. I have to find the right project and the right character. I know when I make an American movie it’s going to come out all over the world -- it doesn’t happen the same way for an Italian film or a French film. I like the idea, so I can make publicity for a film like “Remember Me, My Love.” I know it doesn’t happen very often.

EI: When you first read the script for “Remember Me, My Love” what did you like most about the story and your character?

MB: I like my character, because in this chaotic and hysterical atmosphere, I think she’s the only one with both feet on the ground. She’s very strong and makes her own decisions. I like the concept of the movie, because there are so many interesting scenes. The story is about how sometimes it is difficult to mature in life as a person while you’re living as a couple. In a couple, sometimes, one or both people have to give up their personal life, dreams and ambitions for the good of the family. It’s not like that all of the time, but sometimes it happens. There’s a moment in the film when my character says to Carlo, her lover, talking about her husband, “My husband destroyed everything I was and now that I’m different, he doesn’t love me anymore.” Maybe it’s natural of human beings to kill what we love.

EI: Your character, Alessia, also says that the people closest to you are the ones who can’t see the good things about you. How much do you believe those words to be true?

MB: I think it’s true. That’s why after a while in marriage, it doesn’t work anymore. There is something missing in our nature, there is something wrong. There are few marriages that stay alive forever. We like something, and after a little while, we hate what we used to love. It’s our way of growing up. It’s like a little child who has a beautiful doll. The child loves the doll, but then wants to break the doll to see what’s inside. We are the same.

EI: Early in the film, we learn that Alessia and Carlo had a relationship when they were younger. Why do you think the characters believe a relationship can work now that they are older?

MB: This is the mystery of love. They are looking for an illusion, both of them. They’re not happy in their life, with their husband and wife, and are looking for a dream. They’re looking for a golden moment in their life and both want to believe that the right moment is when they were together. We all need illusions. That’s why we love movies.

EI: What do you think about what Alessia and Carlo are doing to their families?

MB: (They’re doing) terrible things. When people divorce, it’s always such a tragedy for the children. At the same time, if we people stay together it can be even worse. If they’re always yelling at each other, it can be more difficult for the children. It’s always a tragedy when people leave each other, because it’s so hard for the children. It’s so difficult to give lessons about this subject.

The children Alessia has are really small, so maybe for her, it’s even more difficult. But for Carlo, the children are adults. When your children are eighteen, it’s easier than when your children are three or four. They are in the situation where they can’t deal with their reality anymore and they just need to go away and lead a new life. When a relationship doesn’t work anymore, it’s terrible to stay with someone that you don’t love.

EI: What do you think this movie is saying about contemporary relationships and marriage?

MB: I think the film is very bitter. It’s not a happy ending -- it has a very sad meaning in the end. To stay together as a couple, you have to satisfy so many things, and there is a moment when maybe you explode. This is what happens in the movie, so it’s a very bitter one. Maybe this is why it was such a success in Italy, because we talk about the crisis of the concept of the family. In Italy, the concept of the family is very important. Maybe (this film) reflects Italians situations at home.

EI: Is there anything about the character Alessia that you don’t like?

MB: No, actually. She’s better than me. (laughs) She doesn’t accept compromise -- that’s why I like her. She makes decisions that are difficult. To divorce when you have two kids is not an easy decision, but sometimes you have to make that decision if the relationship doesn’t work anymore.

EI: What is Alessia thinking in the scene when she runs into Carlo at the market just before Christmas?

MB: I think she’s a bit pissed with him, because he’s weak, like many men. Many men wait for women to make the decisions and this is the case. Even though she doesn’t say anything, she expresses with her eyes all of the feelings she has inside and how she doesn’t like his attitude. This is why the end is very sad. Carlo only has the courage to become what he wants to be through Alessia. And with his wife, he feels completely crushed, like he can’t express himself. It’s like Carlo and his wife made too big a sacrifice for this family. They don’t have the space to express themselves in their lives, which is why there’s a moment where everything gets closed.

EI: Overall, how was the experience of making this movie?

MB: I liked preparing the movie. The best moment for me as an actress is when I’m preparing my character. This is the most exciting moment. Then when I have to go to Cannes, that is more boring to me. I have to do it, and I have fun for one day or two, but to be on set and to prepare the character, work with the director and other actors, this is for me the most beautiful moment.

EI: How has your life and career changed over the past few years now that you’re a movie star in the United States?

MB: I’m not a movie star -- I’m just an actress. What I like is to have the possibility now to play very interesting, different characters. It’s not about the beauty, the charm or the sensual appearance; now it’s more about acting and that’s what I’m happy about.

Katie Holmes's Sexy Eli Stone Appearance

Katie Holmes is already making her Broadway debut in All My Sons – but the actress will be singing and dancing her way through a guest appearance on ABC's Eli Stone – and PEOPLE has a first look at her in character.

Holmes will play a non-profit attorney with a mysterious case – and some musical ability – during her Oct. 21 appearance.

"She’s singing and dancing,” Eli Stone producer Greg Berlanti told PEOPLE in July. But the producer wouldn't reveal much more about the musical show, saying, "We want to keep an element of mystery for the audience."

What's not a mystery, though, is how Holmes fared on set.

"She was super gracious and lovely," Natasha Henstridge, who plays the title character’s ex-fiancée, said in July. "And statuesque and gorgeous."

Scarlett Johansson Is the Sexiest Woman Alive

We live in an age of specialization. Nothing is left whole. Everything is sliced and diced into its consituent parts. People are bisected, dissected, vivisected. Even the lovely Scarlett Johansson.

In Touch magazine recently did a scientific study and concluded that Scarlett owned the best pair of breasts [FIG. 1] in Hollywood, followed closely by Jessica Simpson and Salma Hayek.

"I'm sure my mom will be proud," says the honoree. "You work hard making independent films for fourteen years and you get voted best breasts."

According to another survey, Scarlett has the second-most-kissable lips in the world [FIG. 2], topped only by the epic mouth of Angelina Jolie [FIG. 3].

And a British poll found Scarlett to have the best female bum [FIG. 4]. "No!" she objects. "There are plenty of girls with nicer butts. There are plenty of girls who work harder for nicer butts."

She declines to name names.

"What about my brain?" she asks. "What about my heart? What about my kidneys and my gallbladder?"

There is, no doubt, a fetish Website devoted to Scarlett's gallbladder -- which, by the way, fellas, is all natural.

But, being a general-interest magazine, Esquire has been bold enough to look past the disconnected parts. We have taken in the totality, the gestalt, and we have concluded that Scarlett Johansson -- lips, butt, kidneys, and all -- is the sexiest woman alive.

I uncovered the tributes to Scarlett's anatomy while preparing for a little project we had planned: to surf the Internet together and have Scarlett critique all the worshipful and/or scary sites devoted to her (like the one that spells out Scarlett with an s for sappy, c for colorful, a for adaptable, et cetera). Well, actually, surfing the Internet was my plan. Scarlett said no.

That's one thing I learned early: Scarlett may be charming, but she knows what she wants. And she did not want to look at the Internet.

Instead we are playing pool at Corner Billiards in lower Manhattan. When I met her here, I took out my notebook. "Just don't write anything pervy," Scarlett advises me.

Which seems a little like Hillary telling a New Republic editor, "Don't write anything political."

Okay, I say, but maybe I could document our date with my digital camera? She agrees but adds, "Can I be art director?" It's a rhetorical question.

Her first art direction: Since she wasn't primped by professional hair and makeup people, she'd "rather" I avoided taking photos of her face. "Which is a polite way of saying no way in hell," she explains.

Her next art direction: She takes the camera and starts shooting her own pictures -- of things like the room [FIG. 5] and me holding a bowl of peanuts [FIG. 6].

We play pool [FIG. 7]. We play abysmally, but at least her form is a thing of beauty [FIG. 8]. She also chalked the stick with elan [FIG. 9], about which I won't say anything pervy.

Scarlett used to come to Corner Billiards when she was in high school. She grew up in New York, started acting here at age seven, got rejected from commercials because her voice was too smoky. (Everyone thought she had a sore throat.) She became famous at thirteen as the injured girl in The Horse Whisperer, and more famous at eighteen when she wore sheer underwear in Lost in Translation. More recently, she's become Woody Allen's muse; was ranked number one on FHM's list of the "100 Sexiest Women;" demanded and got a retraction from a tabloid that said she was seen kissing a woman; starred in The Black Dahlia, a Brian De Palma noir thriller, opposite her boyfriend, Josh Hartnett [FIG. 10]; and currently appears in another thriller, Christopher Nolan's The Prestige.

She's good at noir. I talked to her a few times on the phone over the last several months to ask her a series of admittedly inane questions (e.g., "Book you'd take to a desert island?" "How to Survive on a Desert Island"), and she was always smart and friendly. But at the same time, she's kind of...scary. She's so preternaturally confident and self-possessed, you feel as if she could be, at any moment, inwardly rolling her eyes at your dorkiness. Better men than I have said so.

Consider this DVD commentary from The Man Who Wasn't There, a great 2001 Coen brothers' movie starring Billy Bob Thornton and Scarlett as his piano-playing Lolita [FIG. 11]: "I think we were all a little intimidated by Scarlett," says Joel Coen. "Most people have self-doubt at some point in their lives or work." "Scarlett doesn't have that," says Billy Bob.

At one point, Joel suggested Scarlett eat sunflower seeds during a scene. "She said, 'Why would I eat sunflower seeds?'" recalls Billy Bob. "She looked at Joel like, You idiot. What are you talking about? Joel was like, 'I'm sorry.' And slinked out of the room."

I ask her about this while we play pool.

"What do you expect from a cocky fifteen-year-old?" she says.

And now that she's twenty-one? "Nowadays, I'm riddled with self-doubt, A. J."

She crumples to the floor, pretending to weep.

She is beautiful in person, even unprimped. Some actresses, I've noticed, look surprisingly androgynous offscreen, gangly and curveless. Put baseball caps on them and give them badges and they could be Eagle Scouts. Scarlett is different. She looks like a woman. She exudes womanness. Woody Allen famously called her "sexually overwhelming," which isn't too far off.

Incidentally, I have a theory on why she's the perfect woman for Woody Allen and other conflicted Jewish men: She speaks Yiddish and plays British. In other words, since she's half-Jewish, from her mother, she's got a sarcastic, fast-talking Jewish sensibility. But since she's half-Scandinavian, from her Danish father, she looks like...

"An Aryan?" she offers.

"Yes. An Aryan."

Hence, the Jewish man's ideal. "Thanks! You'd make my grandpa proud."

We leave Corner Billiards and walk downtown to the restaurant of her choice. It's an underground Japanese place -- literally [FIG. 12] -- that she discovered after her stint filming Lost in Translation in Tokyo.

She stops at the bathroom and suggests that I take a photo of the outside of the ladies'-room door [FIG. 13], which seems a little pervy, but who am I to question?

We sit down and get the menus [FIG. 14] from the waiter, whom she calls "honey." She dances in her seat, doing a funky little shoulder shimmy.

Esquire's mystery woman of the last five months (posing alluringly in a series of enigmatic trailer-park tableaus) is in fact a bit of a mystery. Director Christopher Nolan describes it as an "ambiguity...a shielded quality." De Palma puts it this way: "You don't know what's going on behind those eyeballs. She's on some wavelength that you don't have a clue about."

As opposed to, say, Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan, with whom you know exactly what's going on behind those eyeballs. Or Britney Spears, whose belch-filled home videos have their own kind of inscrutability.

Scarlett has more of an aloof, studio-era, Rita Hayworth vibe. Perhaps it's this remoteness that makes us want to fill the void with lurid stories. She's been the subject of more than her fair share. There's the famous shtupping-Benicio-Del-Toro-in-an-elevator story, which she denies and blames on a creepy, possibly vengeful reporter who asked her for a ride home.

Or there's the story of her demanding to be naked on the set of Michael Bay's The Island. Bay -- who in his own DVD commentary calls Scarlett a "pain in the ass to work with, but I mean that in the best way" -- says he went to her trailer because she wouldn't come out. "Scarlett said, 'I'm not wearing this [bleeping] bra. I'm not wearing this [bleeping] ghetto-ass [bleeping] bra.... I'm going naked.' I'm like, 'Scarlett, you can't go naked. This is PG-13.'"

Scarlett shakes her head: "That story's been twisted and turned. They wanted to make me wear this bra when I woke up in the morning. And I was like, Why don't they just have a sheet draped over me? Nobody sleeps in bras, except maybe French women" [FIG. 15].

Not that she's opposed to nudity -- as long as it's on her own terms. For instance, the Vanity Fair cover [FIG. 16]. "It was surprisingly comfortable," she says, biting on edamame. Though she and Keira Knightley were originally going to wear thongs, she says the stylist snipped them off. "Everyone was so busy working or loading film. Here I am, Keira and I, and we're totally naked, and some guy is on his BlackBerry. But I guess it's better than if they were all looking at me."

She decides I've been taking too many notes, asking too many questions, not properly feeding myself.

"Eat, eat!" Scarlett says.

Besides, she'd rather be the one in control. She reaches across the table, grabs my notebook, and proceeds to grill me with questions. Very personal questions.

"How old were you when you lost your virginity?"

I tell her.

"Have you ever had a venereal disease?"

No. Well, there was that one frightening phone call from an ex, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

"How many girls would you say you've slept with?"

She makes the "I'm impressed" face, which is nice of her, since the number is pretty low, about 2 percent of Hartnett levels, I'm guessing.

When I get my notebook back, I ask her about her STD history and sex partners.

"None of your beezness," she says.

She likes her boundaries. If you want to see her face light up, ask her about her methods of evading the paparazzi -- the time her friend's limo blocked the street in a James Bond-style swerve, or the time her driver steered all around Manhattan, exhausting a bike-bound paparazzo.

She once held up a sign that read, THE PERSON TAKING THIS PICTURE IS HARRASSING ME.

"Apparently I spelled harass wrong. It was horrible. I couldn't remember whether it was one r or two, and I asked like four people, and they said two."

She also didn't appreciate Isaac Mizrahi, who, while interviewing her on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, reached out and fondled her award-winning breasts: "I know he doesn't bat on my team, but still."

Before we get the check, I ask her about her twenty-first birthday, and she tells me some story about ordering in White Castle burgers and pizza and a keg of beer.

A couple of weeks later, I watch her on Letterman talking about how she went to a strip club on her twenty-first birthday and got a lap dance from a bony "Amazonian" dancer.

Puzzling. It makes you wonder what other secrets lurk in that sly brain, beyond those seductive kidneys, behind those second-most-kissable lips in the world [FIG. 17].

Hugh Jackman Named People Magazines : The Sexiest Man Alive for 2008

People Magazine just chose its annual Sexiest Man Recipient, giving actor Hugh Jackman the title of Sexiest Man Alive. The choice probably doesn't surprise many fans of the actor, as he has been smoldering on the big screen for quite a few years now. Jackman is 40 years old now, having celebrated a birthday on October 12th, and is a native of Sydney, Australia. Sorry though ladies, he is a happily married man with two kids, who tied the knot back in 1996. Hugh Jackman is married to Deborra Lee Furness, who he met while co-starring on the Australian TV series Correlli.

Hugh Jackman is probably best known for his break-out role as Wolverine in the first three X-Men movies, a role he will reprise when X-Men Origins: Wolverine comes out later in 2009. The actor has also been seen in the romantic comedy Kate & Leopold with Meg Ryan, as the vampire killer Van Helsing opposite Kate Beckinsale, and alongside Halle Berry in the technological thriller Swordfish. Other films to his credit include The Fountain, The Prestige, Happy Feet, Scoop, and Deception. Very soon he will be seen in Baz Luhrmann's epic film Australia, where he will play opposite Nicole Kidman. The film is a huge one in nature, and is definitely going to only help his image as a sexy leading man.

Jackman is typically a shy person, often staying out of the Hollywood lime-light, and instead focusing on his family. The selection of sexiest man alive b People is something for him to be proud of, but probably also a distinction that he wouldn't give himself either. It is sure to be an honor to his wife Deborra Lee Furness though, who certainly has scooped the rest of the women of the world who would agree with People Magazine's latest distinction. Those who want to share in the selection, can enjoy a cover article in the latest edition of People Magazine, which also happens to be a special double issue highlighting Hugh Jackman as their selection, as well as Brad Pitt, Zac Efron, and 129 Smokin' Hot Guys.

Beyonce Knowles profiles

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles (born September 4, 1981),[1] commonly known as Beyoncé (pronounced /biːˈɑn.seɪ/), is an American R&B singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, she enrolled in various performing arts schools, and was first exposed to singing and dancing competitions as a child. Knowles rose to fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of girl group Destiny's Child and went on to sell over 50 million records worldwide with the group.[2][3][4]

After a series of commercial successes with the group, Knowles released her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love, in June 2003. The album became one of the most-successful albums of that year, spawning the number-one singles "Crazy in Love" and "Baby Boy". It earned Knowles five Grammy Awards in a single night in 2004, and its reception signaled her viability as a solo artist. The disbandment of Destiny's Child in 2005 facilitated her continued success; she released her second album, B'Day, in 2006, which spawned the UK number-one singles "Déjà Vu" and "Beautiful Liar", and the worldwide hit "Irreplaceable". Knowles released her third solo album, I Am… Sasha Fierce, on November 18, 2008.

The success of her solo albums has established Knowles as one of the most marketable artists in the industry. She has added acting and endorsement deals to her repertoire. In 2006, she starred in the comedy film The Pink Panther, and, in the same year, scored the main role in the film adaptation of the 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Knowles launched in 2004 her family's fashion line, House of Deréon, and among her many lucrative commercial deals are Pepsi, Tommy Hilfiger, and L'Oréal. Knowles has been with husband Jay-Z since 2002, though they have been discreet about their relationship. After much speculation, they married on April 4, 2008. Knowles has sold more than 75 million albums through out her career together with her album sales with Destiny's Child.[5]

Early life and career beginnings

Knowles was born in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Mathew Knowles, a successful record manager, and Tina Beyincé, a costume designer and hair stylist. Knowles' father is African American and her mother is of Creole (African-American, Native American, and French) descent.[6] Knowles was baptized after her mother's maiden name, as a tribute to her mother and to prevent the name from becoming obsolete, since only a few of the Beyincé males carry the name.[7][8] Her maternal grandparents, Lumis Albert Beyincé and Agnéz Deréon, were French-speaking Louisiana Creoles.[8] She is the elder sister of Solange, a singer-songwriter and actress.

Knowles was schooled at St. Mary's Elementary School in Texas, where she enrolled in dance classes, including ballet and jazz. Her talent in singing was discovered when her dance instructor began humming a song and she finished it, hitting the high-pitched notes.[7] Although a shy girl, as her mother considered her, Knowles' interest in music and performing began unexpectedly after joining in a school talent show. Once she had a moment on the stage, she overcame her shyness and wanted to become a singer and performer.[9] By age seven, Knowles had entered her first talent show, singing John Lennon's "Imagine". She won the contest and was honored with standing ovation.[10][11]

In the fall of 1990, Knowles enrolled in Parker Elementary School, a music magnate school in Houston, where she would perform on-stage with the school's choir.[7] She also attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston[12] and later went to Alief Elsik High School, located in the Houston neighborhood of Alief.[8][13] Knowles was a soloist in the choir of her church, in St. John's United Methodist Church.[7] She only lasted in the choir for two years, however, because she was preoccupied with her newfound career.[14]

At the age of eight, Knowles met LaTavia Roberson while in an audition for a girl group.[15] They, along with Knowles' friend Kelly Rowland were placed into a group that performed rapping and dancing. Originally named Girl's Tyme,[10] they were eventually cut down to six members.[7] With Knowles and Rowland, Gyrl's Time attracted audience nationally. West coast R&B producer, Arne Frager, flew into Houston to see them. He eventually brought them to his studio - The Plant Recording Studios - in Northern California, with Knowles' vocals being featured because Frager thought she had personality and the ability to sing.[7] As part of efforts to sign Gyrl's Time to a major label record deal, Frager's strategy was to debut them in Star Search,[9] the biggest talent show on national TV that time.[7] They participated, but lost the competition because the song they performed was not good, as Knowles herself admitted.[16][17] Knowles had her first "professional setback" after that defeat, but regained confidence after learning that pop stars Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake had also experienced the same fate.[7]

To manage the group, Knowles' father (who was at that time a medical-equipment salesman) resigned in 1995 from his job.[18] He dedicated his time and established a "boot camp" for their training.[9] The move reduced Knowles family's income by half and her parents separated because of the pressure.[8] Not long after the inclusion of Rowland, Mathew cut the original lineup to four,[7] with LeToya Luckett joining in 1993.[15] Rehearsing in Tina's salon and their backyards, the group continued performing as an opening act for other established R&B girl groups of the time;[15] Tina contributed to the cause by designing their costumes, which she continued to do throughout Destiny's Child era. With the continued support of Mathew, they auditioned before record labels and were finally signed to Elektra Records, only to be dropped months later before they could release an album.[8]

Kate winslet

Her career began on television, with an appearance in an episode of the BBC medical drama Casualty in 1989, followed by a co-starring role in the children's science-fiction serial Dark Season two years later, also for the BBC. ...

At age 16, Winslet was cast in the British sci-fi series Dark Season. With this role, critics began to stand up and take notice.

The following year, Kate Winslet auditioned for a role in Sense and Sensibility. The films star Emma Thompson was immediately impressed and Kate won the role, beating out more than a hundred others for the part of Marion Dashwood. Her portrayal won her a British Academy Award and her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. From there, Winslet went on to perform in such films as Jude (1996) and Hamlet (1996).

International stardom came with the role of Rose Dewitt Bukater in 1997s blockbuster Titanic. After the unexpected attention she received from Titanic, Winslet retreated to the less conspicuous roles of independent artsy- films and doing voice work for animation including Christmas Carol: The Movie (2001) where her song What If? was released as a single in the UK (the song made it to the top of the charts in Ireland).
